The Bombers Arrive

The Bombers Arrive
The attack begins
American bombers cross the Channel and release explosives over Saint-Malo. The city’s defenses fire back as residents seek shelter.
Separate rooms of danger
Marie-Laure shelters beneath her bed while Werner is in the cellar of the Hotel of Bees.
The coordinated military attack begins two intimate survival stories that will later converge.
A City Burning

A City Burning
Fire and collapse
Flames spread through buildings, the Hotel of Bees is destroyed, and streets become difficult to cross.
Survival underground
Marie-Laure escapes to her cellar. Werner, Volkheimer, and Bernd survive beneath the hotel but are trapped by the collapsed stairwell.
The bombardment converts shelter into a prison and leaves both characters dependent on improvised knowledge.
The Searcher Enters

The Searcher Enters
A separate objective
Von Rumpel returns to the ruined city and reaches Number 4 rue Vauborel, convinced the stone is hidden there.
A house becomes a battleground
Marie-Laure hides in the wardrobe attic while the dying gemologist searches below her.
The siege’s military scale contracts into a dangerous contest over a model house and a hidden jewel.
A Voice in the Rubble

A Voice in the Rubble
Contact through radio
Marie-Laure reads aloud from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Werner hears her through a repaired transceiver beneath the hotel ruins.
The crisis sharpens
Her urgent warning tells him that the man he saw at the house is directly below her.
The broadcast makes a distant technical signal an immediate demand for action.
A Way Through

A Way Through
Explosion and escape
Volkheimer uses a grenade to break open the rubble after the radio gives him and Werner a reason to keep going.
The meeting
Werner reaches the house, confronts von Rumpel, and finds Marie-Laure. The city’s cease-fire gives them a chance to leave separately.
The converging crisis ends in survival for Marie-Laure, but not in a shared future for the two young people.
